Here is a summary of the differences between the PS3 Slim and the PS3
80GB Fat (UK Specs)
- Price
Both the 80gb PS3 console and the PS3 Slim console are now priced
at £249.99. The price of the existing PS3 Fat dropped by around
£50 the day the new PS3 Slim was announced and brought the price
of the two models in line with each other.
- Reduced size and weight
The whole point of the PS3 slim was to be smaller and lighter than
the behemoth that was the PS3 Phat. The PS3 Slim is 32% smaller and
at 3.2KGs, 36% lighter than the old PS3.
- Faster Processor
The new cell processor, jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba,
is said to be both faster and less power hungry than the CPU in its
full fat brother. This is not just a rumour, but confirmed by IBM.
The PS3 slim should be capable of a higher frame rate, but don't expect
this to be noticeable in all but the most graphically intensive games.
- More Storage - 120GB
Hard disk storage is cheap these days and it didn't cost Sony that
much to increase the disk capacity of the PS3 slim to 120GB. This
extra storage capacity could be useful now that Sony seem intent on
selling games via the download route rather than the normal disk based
retail boxes.
- Enhanced Audio
Fans of high end audio equipment and BluRay films will be pleased
to hear that Sony have added to the audio output functions of the
PS3 slim. The new console will now support both the Dolby TrueHD and
DTS-HD Master audio codecs. True HD is a lossless
audio format that succeeded the older AC-3 codec used by normal
DVD's.
- No PS2 games compatibility
No backward compatibility with PS2 games for the PS3 Slim. This feature
was removed some time ago, as it saves Sony some money on emulation
licences and it was thought that by now, with the PS3 slim being a
4th generation PlayStation, that people would have stopped playing
PS2 games.
- No Linux Support
The option to install an alternative operating system has been removed
from the new PS3 Slim, which means no more linux installs.
- Sony Bravia Integration - Bravia Sync
This is a new feature never seen before, if you have a Sony Bravia
TV, with a PS3 slim you can now access the Playstation XMB with your
TV remote. You can also get your PlayStation Slim to go into standby
when you put your TV into standby. This is a clever move on Sony's
part and should help them shift more of their Bravia TV's
- Colour and finish
We're now on the 4th generation PlayStation and there is still no
sign of Sony releasing this console for the UK in anything else but
black. The PS3 slim is now Charcoal Black rather than Piano Black
which some people (with small kids) will appreciate because it does
not show greasy finger prints.
- Network / Ethernet Ports
Unchanged. Both the PS3 slim and the 80gb PS3 have 1 Ethernet slot
and the same built-in wireless network module.
Wireless support is still limited to 802.11b/g, no sign of any 802.11n
support yet.
- HDMI Ports
Unchanged. The PS3 Slim will have the same single HDMI port, as did
the 80GB UK PS3.
- USB Ports
Both the PS3 Slim and the 80gb PS3 consoles have 2 USB ports. The
PS3 Slim USB ports are both on the front of the console.
We thought 4 USB ports might have been more useful, as connecting
instruments in games such as Guitar Heroes requires extra USB ports.
If you have a spare USB hub, this is not a problem though.
- Power
The new PS3 slim draws a max of 250 watts of power, this is 30 watts
less than the old machine.
The PS3 Phat had a power switch on both the front and the
rear. Sony have removed one of the power switches on the PS3 Slim,
the PS3 slim now has just one power button and that is located at
the front of the machine.
- PS3 Vertical stand
By using a vertical stand (sold separately), users can mount the PS3
in a vertical position
