Is Amazon a safe bet?
When evaluating Amazon as a source for your ps3 pre order, you can't ignore what happened with the Xbox 360 in November of 2005. Amazon took thousands of pre orders and simply couldn't fulfill them. This was partly Microsoft's fault as they let them down on the supply front and everyone else for that matter.

What a lot of customers found unforgiveable is the way they managed that pre order queue. In some cases people placing orders in January 2006 were getting their consoles delivered before those that ordered in 2005! In an effort to supply consoles through their website and service the pre order queue they upset (to put it mildy) a huge number of customers. Amazon's name was mud on a many gaming messages boards for a while as angry customers vented their anger.
After reading this you might be thinking about steering clear of Amazon for your PS3 pre order, but we think they're a safe bet this time. A high profile company like Amazon cannot afford to make this sort of mistake twice. In fact, for the Wii launch they did really well. They stopped taking preorders as soon as they exhausted their stock allocation and only when they had delivered all of those preorders did they start releasing stock onto their website again. For the PS3 launch you can guarantee Amazon will be making a huge effort to get it right. This time around we think they're going to work much more closely with their supplier (Sony) to ensure that they know exactly how many consoles they're getting. We also expect them to manage that pre order queue properly this time!
The fact that Amazon got it so wrong with the Xbox 360 could work in your favour. We're sure the majority of the gamers that pre ordered their Xbox 360 from Amazon will be placing their PS3 pre order elsewhere this time and they'll be followed by many more that just heard about the fiasco. This can only increase your chances of getting to the top of that pre order queue.
