PS3 Slim Goes on a Diet, Loses 200 Grams

Rumored weight reduction hints at beneficial internal changes

There are rumors, coming from a certain Japanese website that a new Playstation 3 SKU is due this month. The new SKU will supposedly bring us a lighter PS3 Slim console. The new version of the console at just 3kgs is rumored to be 200 grams lighter than the previous version. The website even details the new models numbers - CECH-2000A and CECH-2100A.

If this is true, the case and form factor are unlikely to change, so the weight reduction most probably comes from a few internal component changes. For most people, we would guess that this weight reduction is not going to change their lives in any way. The PS3 is not a handheld PSP after all and will spend most of its life sitting under your TV.

It's hard to believe Sony would produce a new SKU for such a minor weight change. So it will be interesting to see if these component changes bring any other benefits such as improved power consumption or reduced noise output.
