40GB PS3 vs 80GB PS3
Here is a summary of the differences between the old 40GB PS3 and the
new 80GB PS3 (UK Specs)
- Price
Both the 80gb PS3 console and the 40gb PS3 console are still priced
at £299. Its surprising that there has been no price drop for
the 40GB PS3 yet, as the 80GB PS3 is obviously better value now.
- Ethernet Ports
Unchanged. Both the 80gb and the 40gb PS3 have 1 Ethernet slot. Not
that this is a bad thing, I can’t see too many people wanting
more than one ethernet port.
- HDMI Ports
Unchanged. The 80GB PS3 will have the same single HDMI port, as did
the 40GB UK PS3. How many TV’s do you need to connect one PS3
to anyway. Dual screen 1080P must have been used by a handful of people
at most.
- USB Ports
Both the 80gb PS3 and the 40gb PS3 consoles have 2 USB ports. We thought
4 USB ports would be better, as connecting instruments in games such
as Guitar Heroes requires extra USB ports. But this is easily solved
by purchasing a USB hub and plugging that into one of your USB ports.
- Flash Memory Card Slots
It seems that neither the 80gb or the 40gb PS3 have slots for
the Flash memory card, or the memory pro stick duo. However these
issues are easily solved.
You can either transfer data from your memory cards to your computer
and hook your PS3 up to the computer and to transfer the data across,
or for a Memory Stick Pro Duo you can transfer the data via your PSP.
- Controller Vibration
This is not specific to the new 80GB PS3; but we all missed controller
vibration in our Playstation controllers and the good news is that
Sony have finally released a new version of their controller called
the Dualshock 3 wireless controller. This controller now has the new
vibration feature and still retains the six axis control.
- PS2 games compatibility
No backward compatibility with PS2 games for the 40GB PS3. Sony said
something about saving money here by not paying for emulation licences.
Backwards compatibility was dropped with the 60GB PS3 in the UK, so
neither the 80gb or the 40gb have backwards compatibility, which is
a shame as I am sure that a lot of you gamers have a few old favourites.
Although the PS3 online shop do now sell a select list of old PS1
games so I guess that’s progress.
